Nintendo is the king of gaming for non-gamers. Mario Kart, Mario Party, Super Smash, and others are games that almost everyone has played – whether or not they dabble in other areas of the genre.

Switch Sports, the successor to Wii Sports, falls into the same category: a game for non-gamers.

That doesn’t make the game bad or good – it is what it is.

Is Switch Sports fun?

In short, yes. Switch Sports is fun.

There are six game modes on launch: Volleyball, Soccer, Bowling, Badminton, Chambara (Sword Fighting), and Tennis. If Wii Sports is any indication, Nintendo will probably release a Switch Sports 2 rather than updating the first.

Playing online is rewarding, as wins advance you toward the “Pro League” – a glorified ranking system that you reach after 10 matches.

You can play locally, against friends in private matches, or online with 1-2 players in your home.

Badminton and Volleyball are the standout sports, to me. Both of these games are easy to understand but have a high enough skill gap to reward a true understanding of the mechanics.

Bowling, Tennis, and Chambara are very similar to how they were in Wii Sports and Wii Sports 2. Soccer is the Switch Sports version of Rocket League.

Is it worth it?

Switch Sports is fun enough to get your money’s worth if you enjoy a bit of movement in your game, from time to time.

I don’t see too many people playing the game alone. As is the case with every multiplayer game, it’s better with a few friends.

Since you can’t play co-op with an online teammate, I’d recommend this game more to people who have a sibling, parent, or significant other in the house.

Switch Sports is, by far, best for these two groups: n

  • Non-gaming parents who want something to play with their kids
  • A gamer who wants to bond with their non-gamer significant other
  • Anyone who likes the idea of moving a bit while satisfying their competitive gaming itch

If you’re a solo gamer, or will only play Switch Sports with an online friend, then this might not be the game for you.
